Title:  Engineer III - Product Engineering

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Product Engineer is responsible for the technical ownership and lifecycle management of Plasma Products from New Product Introduction (NPI) through sustaining manufacturing and end-of-life. The role works closely with Product Management, Design Engineering, Test Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations to ensure products are successfully introduced, manufactured, maintained, improved, and transitioned throughout their product lifecycle.

The position provides technical product management support, including product configuration, engineering change management, manufacturability, product performance, cost optimization, issue resolution, and continuous improvement.

The Product Engineer will serve as a key technical interface between engineering and manufacturing and ensure that product requirements, engineering changes, manufacturing processes, documentation, and product data remain aligned throughout the product lifecycle.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. New Product Introduction (NPI)

• Lead and/or support the NPI introduction of Plasma Products into manufacturing.
• Coordinate engineering activities from prototype through production readiness and volume manufacturing.
• Review product design, BOM, drawings, specifications, manufacturing requirements, and test requirements for production readiness.
• Identify and resolve manufacturability, testability, reliability, quality, and production issues during NPI.
• Coordinate engineering builds, qualification builds, pilot runs, and production ramp activities.
• Establish and track NPI deliverables, milestones, risks, and action items.
• Support transition of new products from Engineering to Manufacturing.
• Ensure lessons learned from NPI are incorporated into product and manufacturing documentation.

2. Product Lifecycle Management

• Own and maintain the technical integrity of assigned Plasma Products throughout the product lifecycle.
• Support product lifecycle activities from introduction, production ramp, sustaining, optimization, and eventual product discontinuation.
• Maintain product configuration, BOM structures, product specifications, drawings, work instructions, and related engineering documentation.
• Monitor product performance, manufacturing yield, quality, reliability, cost, and customer-related issues.
• Identify opportunities for product cost reduction, quality improvement, process optimization, and obsolescence mitigation.
• Support product lifecycle reviews and recommend appropriate engineering actions based on product performance and business requirements.
• Ensure product documentation remains current and aligned with the released product configuration.

3. Engineering Change Management

• Drive and/or support Engineering Change Orders (ECO), Engineering Change Requests (ECR), Temporary Process Deviations (TPD), temporary product deviations, and product configuration changes
• Evaluate the technical, manufacturing, quality, test, supply chain, and cost impact of proposed product changes.
• Coordinate cross-functional review and implementation of engineering changes.
• Ensure appropriate validation, qualification, and verification activities are completed before implementation.
• Manage change implementation plans and ensure effective transition to manufacturing.
• Assess risks associated with component substitutions, supplier changes, design changes, process changes, and product revisions.
• Ensure obsolete or superseded documentation and product configurations are appropriately controlled.
• Manage the review, risk assessment, approval, implementation, monitoring, and closure of Temporary Process Deviations (TPDs).
• Ensure all TPDs are appropriately documented, justified, time-bound, and supported by containment actions, validation plans, and exit criteria.
• Coordinate cross-functional review and approval of TPDs involving Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations.
• Monitor active TPDs to ensure timely closure, permanent corrective action implementation, and compliance with company quality system requirements.

4. Manufacturing & Sustaining Engineering

• Provide technical support to manufacturing for Plasma Products.
• Lead technical investigations for production issues, yield loss, product failures, and recurring manufacturing problems.
• Apply structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, DMAIC, FMEA, Fishbone, 5-Why, and fault-tree analysis where appropriate.
• Work with Manufacturing and Test Engineering to improve process capability, product quality, yield, and throughput.
• Analyse production data and failure trends to identify systemic issues.
• Support root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions.
• Develop and implement engineering solutions to improve product manufacturability and production robustness.

5. Technical Product Management

• Act as the technical product owner for assigned Plasma Products.
• Translate product requirements and business needs into technical actions and engineering priorities.
• Maintain awareness of product architecture, critical components, key product characteristics, specifications, interfaces, and manufacturing requirements.
• Provide technical input to product roadmaps, product changes, cost-reduction initiatives, and lifecycle decisions.
• Support product management with technical analysis, risk assessment, cost-impact evaluation, and manufacturing feasibility.
• Identify technical risks and opportunities that may affect product cost, quality, delivery, reliability, or lifecycle.
• Support technical reviews with internal and external stakeholders.

6. Product Quality & Reliability

• Monitor product quality and reliability performance throughout the product lifecycle.
• Support failure analysis of Plasma Products and identify corrective actions.
• Collaborate with Quality and Engineering teams on customer complaints, field failures, HASS/reliability issues, and production escapes.
• Identify critical product characteristics and potential failure mechanisms.
• Support FMEA updates and ensure identified risks are appropriately addressed.
• Drive continuous improvement activities based on manufacturing and field performance data.

7. Supplier & Component Management

• Support technical evaluation and qualification of alternative components and suppliers.
• Assess component obsolescence, availability, lifecycle, and technical risks.
• Participate in supplier technical reviews and component qualification activities.
• Support alternate-source qualification and product revalidation where required.
• Evaluate the impact of component changes on product performance, reliability, manufacturing, and test.

8. Documentation & Configuration Control

• Maintain accurate product documentation and configuration records.
• Ensure BOMs, drawings, specifications, engineering instructions, test requirements, and manufacturing documentation are consistent with the released product.
• Support configuration audits and product data integrity activities.
• Ensure engineering changes are properly documented, reviewed, approved, and implemented.

• Maintain confidentiality of all information related to the production processes and components, business and other technology including materials.
• Other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Location: Penang Science Park, Simpang Ampat Penang.
• Works in a standard office and manufacturing/engineering environment.
• Works closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and other cross-functional teams.
• May work with electrical/electronic products, manufacturing equipment and engineering test equipment as required.
• Works in and around high-power, high-voltage and high-current systems where applicable; appropriate safety training is required.
• Travel may involve domestic and international travel to other company sites, suppliers or customers as required.
• Overtime may be necessary during NPI builds, production ramp or period of increased business demand.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Good understanding of electrical/electronic and/or mechanical engineering principles.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications and other technical documentation.
• Knowledge of product engineering, manufacturing processes and product lifecycle management.
• Knowledge of New Product Introduction (NPI), engineering change and configuration management processes.
• Ability to perform product and manufacturing data analysis and apply structured problem-solving methodologies.
• Knowledge of root-cause analysis, failure analysis and corrective/preventive action methodologies.
• Understanding of product quality, reliability, risk management and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles.
• Ability to support product and component qualification activities.
• Ability to manage engineering activities and priorities according to defined timelines.
• Good analytical, problem-solving and technical judgement.
• Good written and verbal English communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to communicate technical issues, risks and recommendations effectively to relevant stakeholders.
• Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies.
• Ability to influence and provide technical guidance to stakeholders, commensurate with job level.

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience in product engineering, NPI, manufacturing engineering, sustaining engineering or related technical functions within an electronics/manufacturing environment.
• Experience in engineering change management, product configuration and lifecycle management.
• Experience in product/component qualification, root-cause analysis, failure analysis and continuous improvement activities.
• Experience in high-mix manufacturing environment would be an advantage.

EDUCATION:

Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Master’s Degree in a relevant engineering discipline and/or relevant professional or technical certification.
