POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking an Electronic Engineer to support various functions of an R&D laboratory, including rapid experiment execution, equipment installation and maintenance, and process automation. This is a hands-on role with significant impacts on new technology development in the Plasma Power group. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer who enjoys experimental work, troubleshooting complex electromechanical systems, writing scripts for data/logging/automation, and piecing together robust solutions in a fluid, fast-paced environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build scripts (e.g., Python/JMP) or LabVIEW routines to automate equipment and capture/clean/analyze logs.
- Author clear experimental reports, translating data into hypotheses, evidence, and next steps.
- Design and execute DOEs to validate performance windows and sensitivities, feeding critical learning back into the Engineering and Controls teams.
- Maintain EtherCAT mainframe and infrastructure in the laboratory.
- Mechanical design experience with CAD software.
- Own the uptime and maintenance of of R&D semiconductor etch and deposition tools and ancillary equipment.
- Triage down tools and troubleshoot vacuum systems (UHV/HV), RF / DC generators & matching networks, gas panels/MFCs, and thermal control.
- Perform preventive maintenance adapted to research cadence; implement failure pareto and recurrence controls while maintaining experimental agility.
- Conduct MSA/Gage R&R studies where measurement fidelity affects conclusions.
- Modify R&D semiconductor etch and deposition tools and ancillary equipment, plan/mechanize non-standard configurations (RF/DC generator and matching network changes and custom fixtures).
- Maintain the lab and all equipment in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety regulations. Participate in regular safety team meetings, audits, and projects.
- May assist in training other AE employees on established processes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Located in Fort Collins, CO
- Standard office and laboratory environment.
- Infrequent (~5%) domestic travel may be required
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics plus 2+ years hands-on experience with semiconductor or precision electro-mechanical systems.
- Or M.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Physics plus 0 years experience
- Comfortable with:
- Vacuum systems (leak checking, pump types, gauges, seals)
- RF power & matching basics; grounding, EMI/RFI, shielding
- Gas handling (MFCs, valves, regulators, purging) & pneumatics
- Tools including Python, JMP, MATLAB, or LabVIEW, TwinCAT
- Standard laboratory instrumentation, including but not limited to oscilloscopes, VNAs, RF VI probes, multimeters, leak detectors, and thermal sensors
- Reading schematics, PIDs, and wiring diagrams
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently as needed as well in a multi-national, collaborative and highly innovative team environment.
- Strong verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.
Desired
- Working knowledge of RF engineering and plasma physics principles.
- Basic understanding of power electronics and power supply technologies.
EXPERIENCE:
- 0–2 years hands-on experience (internships, labs, senior projects) with semiconductor or precision electro-mechanical systems.
- Master’s with no experience accepted.
EDUCATION:
- B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or related technical / scientific field
COMPENSATION:
As required by multiple state pay transparency laws, Advanced Energy provides a reasonable range of compensation for each job posting. Actual compensation is influenced by an array of factors including, but not limited to, skill set, level of experience, and specific office location. The range of starting pay for this role is $75,000 - $105,000 per year.
